Assignment: After reading Polifko Chapter 4 identify which element of the healthy work environment essentials would be hardest to implement where you work (or use a clinical experience if not employed) and explain why in 500 words or less
Meaningful recognition is an element of a healthy working environment that is at times difficult to implement. This is because it requires changes in the workplace culture where different health practitioners are recognized for their efforts. While nurses remain committed they often do not get credit or recognition for their contribution. This potentially creates discontentment among nurses who feel that they are not honored and supported (Polifko-Harris, 2009). A workplace culture that emphasizes meaningful recognition is associated with fewer disagreements among health care team members. Sometimes the leadership does not want to single out individuals for meaningful recognition as nurses are seen to be simply doing their jobs.
It may be necessary to change the workplace culture to raise awareness on the importance of meaningful recognition. The implication of this is that the hospital leadership needs to support changes that enhance meaningful recognition of nurses.
