The concepts of confidentiality and informed consent are sophisticated when the patient is an adolescent (Butler & Middleman, 2017). It is specifically true when the wishes and needs of an adolescent conflict with the preferences and opinions of his or her parents.
It’s safe to say that the guidelines and laws governing confidentiality and consent in adolescent healthcare differ from state to state (Butler & Middleman, 2018). In my state, clinicians who deal with adolescents are required to be aware of the state and federal laws that are meant to ensure the wellbeing and safety of adolescents. They also need to know the confidentiality and consent policies of the facility in which they work. Not only this but also they have to be familiar with the potential ways in which the confidentiality, and safety of adolescents are compromised.
