My healthcare facility has experience with an external disaster. An external disaster constitutes one that happens outside the healthcare facility and does not threaten the staff, patients, or other healthcare system stakeholders inside the premises directly. The emergency impacted the facility, given the potential for the large number of casualties that we anticipated would arrive for medical attention. The disaster was a large fire within the community. It was a prolonged and severe disaster that put the healthcare facility’s emergency preparedness plan to test. The hospital had a difficult time implementing the emergency response plan to reduce the disaster severity.
