Health Promotion in Minority Populations Students Name Institutional Affiliation Description of the ethnic minority group and current health status One of the largest minority groups in the unites states of America is African-Americans. An approximation of one-third of the blacks in America is believed to live below the poverty line. As well, in the past five decades, the unemployment rate of blacks is twice that of the whites. The mortality rate is also estimated to be 50% more than that of the whites while the excess deaths account to 42%. Due to the poor living conditions and the inability to access quality medical care, the life expectancy of most of the blacks is decreasing as that of the whites keep on increasing. They are often affected by diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and chemical dependency complications (Griggs, Maingi, Blinder, Denduluri, Khorana, Norton & Rowland, 2017). Infant mortality and violence are also a contributing factor to the health problems facing the African-Americans. In addition, the prevalence of AIDS among blacks is three times higher than in the white's population. How race and ethnicity influence the group's health The blacks are often associated with interpersonal violence which results in unintentional injuries, alcohol, and substance abuse. The secretaries task force report indicates that 87% of the excess deaths of the blacks occurred before the individuals could reach the age of 45 years. The deaths were associated with various challenges of prevention resulting from a collision between the increased rate of urbanization and traditional culture. Historical treaties and the relationship that the blacks have with the government pose a challenge in the implementation of the health promotion programs. In addition, certain genetic predispositions among blacks make the development of particular diseases inevitable. For instance, noninsulin-dependent diabetes, sickle cell anemia, and hypertension are common among blacks. The genetic screening for such diseases does not cause much changes in their prevention among the African-Americans. Health disparities and nutritional challenges for the group The top causes of death tend to be the same for all the ethnicities in America. However, the difference in the rates of death is caused by an increase in the risk factors among blacks. Homicide, perinatal diseases stroke, and diabetes are some of the health disparities contributing to the higher rates of death among the African-Americans. The risk factors of such causes of death can be minimized through proper medical healthcare, which requires money. Given the poor socioeconomic status for most of the blacks, then it becomes difficult for them to reduce the risks. Therefore, the government has focused on the elimination of such health disparities through the development of culturally appropriate health programs. This would include equal access to quality healthcare and community support (Anderson, Adeney, Shinn, Safranek, Buckner‐Brown & Krause, 2015).
