A healing hospital paradigm involves the combination of scientific medical methods and loving care that addresses not only the patients emotional but also the spiritual needs. A healing hospital approach places the patient as the center of focus in caregiving. The patient takes an active rather than a passive role in determining the required changes that are necessary for their healing. Caregivers establish relationships with patients for purposes of elucidating positive energy that is known to promote speedy healing. A healing paradigm also provides adequate caregivers and other resources in the hospital to promote provision of personalized care (Waters, 2008).
Caregivers’ focus is not on curing which may not be attainable rather; it is oriented towards enabling the patient to achieve healing. Patients set their healing goals and caregivers support both the patient’s family and the patient towards creating an optimal healing experience. Caregivers provide safe, comfortable and supportive atmosphere and interacts with the patient and the family to generate positive energy that leads to healing (Waters, 2008). A healing hospital encompasses three primary components namely ensuring a loving care tradition, healing supportive physical environment, and an integrated work design and technology (Chapman, 2011). Creating such a healing environment is however not devoid of challenges. To show how a healing hospital paradigm impacts on caregiving, this paper outlines the components, challenges and biblical basis of healing hospitals.
A loving environment is a very important aspect in a patient’s care process. A healing hospital provides care that is supportive to the family and to the physical elements of disease as well as to the emotional and spiritual aspects of the patient. Providing loving care is a very important component of a healing hospital approach. It entails not only attending to the physical needs but also the patient’s emotional needs as well. Caregivers concentrate their efforts at ensuring that patient’s optimal comfort and psychological preparation before treatment. Spirituality is based on the premise of compassion for others and caregivers offer compassionate care that soothes the patients and expedites the repair and healing process (Chapman, 2011).
The physical environment is also very important in a healing hospital approach. This is because patients require being in aesthetically quiet environments that facilitate healing. Such environments are important because they promote peaceful sleep, which is important for rest. During sleep or rest, cells regenerate and attain recovery. Many hospitals are noisy, which emanates from relatives conversations on corridors, pagers, and other machines that slow the healing process. Aesthetic physical features such as green painted walls elicit feelings of peace and rejuvenation and rosary beads to provide a link with spirituality.
