Group psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or several therapists can attend to a few groups of people in a group. This form of therapy instills hope among the members as they can interact with others who have recovered. The article delves into the effectiveness of group psychotherapy among HIV infected individuals with depressive symptoms. The study shows that group psychotherapy may lessen the depressive among the patients. There are various types of group psychotherapy; cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), supportive psychotherapy, coping effectiveness training (CET), and blend of emotional expressive and CBT therapy. Some of these therapy sessions concentrated on solely treating depressive symptoms while others, a combination of depressive symptoms as well as the grief. Members of the group psychotherapy were the HIV infected patients undergoing depressive symptoms, and surprisingly, all of the members were men except for one study. The patients are selected based on the depressive symptoms because the therapy sessions have proven to be useful to them, unlike those undergoing major depression.
The treatment sessions stretch between seven to fifteen, and each session should be about 90 to 150 minutes. The sittings are interactive because it provides emotional support, reduces stigma, and enhances one's self-esteem; hence adequate time has to be allocated.
