Global health is an issue of great concern. There is a greater need for a concerted effort in providing quality healthcare across a wide spectrum of the population. The sphere of healthcare is battling both non-communicable and infectious diseases, which have led to significant levels of morbidity, mortality, and suffering, among other adverse health consequences. Highly infectious diseases constitute an imminent threat to global health. It is paramount to have a health system that is comprised of the public healthcare system, health agencies, and authorities who can implement the event-based surveillance on infectious diseases like Avian Influenza A Virus Infection. An influenza pandemic is an outbreak of influenza A virus that occurs when new or novel influenza A viruses emerge and infect people, followed by a transmission from one person to another in a sustained approach. The management of any infectious diseases like Avian Influenza A Virus or the current Coronavirus requires a responsive and effective global health system. This paper will focus on influenza A virus infection, with overarching attention on avian virus infection.
Types of Influenza Viruses and Disease Demographics
Influenza viruses are among the top infectious threats to global health. This class of viruses falls into four categorical types, i.e., A, B, C, and D, and they are further subdivided into subtypes based on the features of two main surface glycoproteins, which are hemagglutinin (HA), and neuraminidase (NA) and these are numbered accordingly (Christian et al.,2017). Only influenza A has been found to cause seasonal influenza epidemics, but rarely pandemics.
Novel influenza A virus are a group of viruses that originate from animals. They are quite distinct from seasonal influenza A viruses, which circulate among people. Novel influenza virus results from evolution in animals until it reaches the level of zoonotic transmission where it is passed from animals to humans, leading to possible pandemic influenza. A pandemic can result when a novel influenza virus secures the capacity to sustained human-to-human transmission. The early detection of a virus that has the potential to cause pandemic can help in control and prevention. The influenza A virus caused the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and sporadic transmission of Influenza A virus from swine-origin to continue to be identified in the U.S and other regions, through laboratory testing (Christian et al., 2017). However, avian influenza A viruses pose more threat than influenza A from swine-origin due to their wide diversity and circulation amongst birds globally: the migratory patterns of births might fuel the transmission of avian A virus and some previous incidences of influenza A pandemic have been attributed partly to the avian source.
