Introduction The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, was published on October 2010 and is a comprehensive analysis of hospital staff, specifically nurses. The suggestions are given in the study put emphasis on the crucial avenue of diverse health needs, changing biomarkers across patients throughout their life, and nursing labor force actions (Academicprogression, 2017). The report is intended to support a foundation of conditions for modifications in the nursing profession and the delivery method for healthcare services Summary of Important Points Following are the key points discussed in the report (Kershaw, 2011): 1 Nurses have the right to practice based on the skill they have acquired and nothing below it. 2 Nurses should be exposed to an education system which further enhances their skills and promotes a higher level of education. 3 Health physicians should involve nurses as partners for redesigning the healthcare system. 4 Better data collection and enhanced information infrastructure involve effective employee management and policymaking These main messages approve the need for pushing the nursing profession into three main areas such as medical practice, training, and leadership responsibility — and to gather better health care workforce information to inform planning for the needed modifications to the nursing profession and the general medical system. Impact of IOM Report Nursing Education The IOM report suggested a target of at least 80% of the nurse population should have a BSN degree by 2020. However it has been noted that about 50% of the employed nurses are now BSN nurses. Hawaii has been noted to have about 70-72% BSN nurses.
