Nursing forms the largest health care profession in the US. It is the profession that played a fundamental role in the realization of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 goals by being at the forefront of patient care. There were certain limitations set forth by the 1965 Medicare and Medicaid Act. The limitation included the inability of nurses to respond and adapt effectively to the promptly evolving medical care settings and changing health care system. The limitation needed to be addressed to guarantee that nurses became very much situated to lead change and propel wellbeing. In this way, the IOM and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation dispatched a two-year Committee Initiative in 2008 to react to the need to survey and change the nursing occupation.
The task of RWJF and IOM was to direct a careful examination of the nursing drive and prompted the report named The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health(IOM, 2011).The suggestions offered in the report concentrated on the basic convergence between the patients’ wellbeing needs, health care technological advancement and evolving roles of the nurses. The suggestions were expected to reinforce nurses’ accomplishments and improve the well-being of Americans by ensuring an effective health care delivery. Therefore, the work of RWJF was to react to the limitation in previous Medical Acts, evaluate and bring transformations within the nursing fraternity.
The importance of the IOM report was to carry the four messages that represented the committee recommendations for an action situated plan for the ultimate providence of nursing.
Nurses need to practice to the best level of their knowledge and skills. The other message carried was that nurses need to achieve more nursing-care training through an enhanced training curriculum that ensures consistent educational progression.
