Review of 2010 IOM Report
Introduction
Following is a comprehensive summary of the key points published in 2010 IOM report, in which the Congress and the President signed a law into healthcare legislation, which is collectively referred to as the Affordable Care Act or the ACA. The report envisions primary care and prevention as the key drivers of the health care system by indicating inter-professional cooperation and coordination as the required standard. It also describes reward value payment for health care providers, and quality care to be delivered at an affordable cost for both society and its individuals. In addition, the growth rate of health care expenditure and responsiveness to the requirements and wishes of people is illustrated by delivering sincere patient-centred care (IOM, 2010). This report will discuss some of the key messages of the IOM 2010 report and its effect on the future of nursing.
Key Messages in the IOM Report
The IOM report highlights important factors which are important to keep in mind for the progress of nurses in the medical society. The practices of the 20th century cannot be followed in the 21st due to the needs and expectations of this era. While deliberating throughout the report, the board formed four important clauses which deal with the role of nurses in the field of leadership, education and work-practice. Such as:
1 It is essential for nurses to exercise their education and training to the fullest extent by encouraging patient choice and patient-oriented care,
2 Nurses must undergo high levels of training, both before and after receiving their licenses to ensure continuous growth and smooth academic progression,
3 Nurses ought to be part of the team when designing the healthcare system with other physicians and healthcare specialists due to their unique position, which allows a direct link between the course of treatment and desired goal,
4 Finally, while points 1, 2 and 3, are some important points discussed in this report, it is important to understand these implements are futile if we do not have enough data to explore the expected growth in the workforce.
