Occupational stress of nurses in emergency care: an integrative review of the literature
Francimar Nipo Bezzerra; Telma Marques da Silva; Vania Pinheiro Ramos (2012).
Statement of the problem
The authors have clearly detailed the problem that prompted them to undertake the study. They have demonstrated it as follows:
All employees are faced with occupational due to the factors related to work that constitute activities that are filled with behaviors, values and intentions. Work is aimed to enable the individuals to grow, transform, and recognize their personal independence. However, there are constant changes in the workplace that are imposed on the individuals that create problems such as dissatisfaction, insecurity, and irritation. Sometimes the work can favor health and illness. However, despite the technological advancements, the work performed by nurses remains to be labor intensive and unequal mastery of components that the individuals interact with in the processes.
Based on the above text, the relationship between work and health largely depends on how the nurses comprehend the two. Therefore, the interpersonal relationships tend to influence the health of the nurses. Therefore, the nurse works as an agent and as a subject of him/herself, but they have to work in a normal way with a lot of responsibilities, rotational shifts, and need for constant improvement of knowledge. Also on consideration of the above text, the role of nurses in health care facilities is as a “trigger of physical and emotional wear and stress, since the environment in which they operate includes the joint action of a multidisciplinary team, committed to the requirements of the work process and responsible for the well-being and lives of patients.” Consequently, nurses who work in emergency care units on a daily basis are faced with situations that need rapid conducts and at times simultaneous actions are required without being given enough time to plan or reorganize themselves. Thus they need a lot of knowledge, skills, and self-control to provide efficient care to the patients and avoid unnecessary errors. Therefore, “Nurses are constantly dealing with imminent risk of death, in which the complexity of care provided coupled with personal factors, have frequent relationship with the onset of stress,” (Bezerra, Silva & Ramos, 2012).
Purpose and Research Questions
The purpose of carrying out the study was to “analyze the scientific production related to the way in which occupational stress is present on the life of a nurse who works in the urgent and emergency care setting.” In conducting their research they were guided by the following question “what is the scientific production that relates to occupational stress is present in the life of a nurse who works in the urgent and emergency care setting?' (Bezerra, Silva & Ramos, 2012).
From the above objective a...
