According to Benson (1993), benchmarking is “the process of establishing a standard of excellence and comparing a business function or activity, a product, or an enterprise as a whole with that standard”. In many aspects of healthcare, this process is beneficial for the fact that it tries to find ways to better improve the healthcare received by everyone by looking for alternative methods and processes in particular areas. This method of trying to increase knowledge on particular fields through the pursuit of evidence, is perhaps, one of the greatest benefit of benchmarking in healthcare. However, this does not mean that this method is devoid of any negative repecussions/consequences.
