The use of the word “Natural” on food labeling has drawn a lot of public interest. Consequently, the FDA has been working to provide guidelines on what this label implies, some of which are normally unknown to many. The first guideline that I was not familiar with was that “natural” in labeling human food is used to mark that the food sample contains nothing synthetic or artificial, even adding food color would make the food no longer natural. The other guideline is that when referring to the term “natural” only the food sample should be taken into account and not the process that the food undergoes during manufacturing. Moreover, the nutritional benefit of a food does not dictate how it should be labeled.
