The Heritage Assessment Tool is primarily used by the healthcare professionals to evaluate the ethnic, cultural and religious history of a patient. This information is then used to determine the best treatment for a particular disease. It’s safe to say that a person’s culture and religion have great impacts on his health. The doctor can use the information through the Heritage Assessment Tool to cure a patient in a better way and to help him recover from the disease at a fast speed. The persons I have selected for my interview are high school students in their respective states.
Culture#1: Native American or Caucasian
We would have to admit that this culture is a blend of different ethnicities, beliefs and cultures. This student belongs to a middle-class family whose forefathers were born and raised in Tennessee. It should be noticed that Tennessee is a mountainous area where people use midwives to deliver care to their babies. They claim that doing so, they are providing lots of affection and love to their children. He is physically and mentally strong, and just like his elders, this students depend on homemade food rather than fast foods. In his childhood, his parents moved to New York (Gnevsheva, 2018). They raised their children in a religious environment, and used to spend a lot on the look after of their kids. The people belonging to this culture don’t approach doctors for minor diseases. Instead, they try some home remedies and herbs to cure illnesses. It should be noticed that the native American population strongly believes in spirits. They claim that one’s wellness and prosperity is based on the desires of spirits, so there is no need to consult a doctor for minor to moderate diseases. Meanwhile, healing from the illnesses is done through rituals, and the sick persons are handed over to the so-called spirits (Gnevsheva, 2018).
Culture#2: Hispanic
Just like Native Americans, the people belonging to Hispanic culture believe that healing is possible with the help of spirits. Instead of visiting doctors, they seek care from their so-called gods and believe in the existence of spirits. In this culture, the healer is regarded as curandero who uses different oils, herbs, and prayers to help a patient recover from the illness as soon as possible. They also believe that a disease is occurred by the will of God. If God approves a disease, it may appear in a person instantly (Ferrari, 2014).
