Q.1Living near or working in uranium mines poses health risks. One, inhaling the harmful uranium particles, as well as, elements from other materials such as thorium, lead, and polonium cause radiation. Second, ingesting or inhaling uranium particles alter the molecular structure of one’s cells predisposing one to cancer such as leukemia and lung cancer (National Research Council, 2012). Third, it leads to congenital disabilities such as congenital heart defects and malformed brain and limbs as uranium particulates modify the normal development of genes passed from a parent to children.
Q.2Nuclear energy is not our best solution to global warming. There is a need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide emitted by over-reliance on coal, oil, and gas as the primary sources of energy to efficiently address global warming.
