According to Fernandez-Parsons, Rodriguez & Goyal (2013) emergency nursing staff suffered low to moderate level of moral distress, and this was related to the competency of health care workers. The researchers utilized the quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive study design, and the research was conducted in a northern California community hospital (Fernandez-Parsons, Rodriguez & Goyal, 2013). In the cross-sectional design there is a single point of data collection compared to longitudinal research where data is collected from multiple points of data (Polit & Beck, 2016). Among the study participants who were surveyed there was no follow-up and the research design is easier to utilize compared with longitudinal study.
There are limitations to the quantitative study since generalizing also depends on the sampled population. Efforts were made to eliminate selection bias, while only 51 nurses completed the surveys (Fernandez-Parsons, Rodriguez & Goyal, 2013). Even as all study participants were from the emergency department, they self-reported on their perceptions of moral distress this may have affected the study results. Other studies highlighting he likely impact of moral distress on nurses report higher levels, but he choice of settings also influences results as emergency nurses tend to be spend little time with patients (Fernandez-Parsons, Rodriguez & Goyal, 2013).
Similar to other quantitative studies the study variables and the methodology are considered when analyzing the research design. Even as the sample in the study was studied as a group, but other research also isolate the factors that explain the relationships of dependent and independent variables. In the study by Fernandez-Parsons, Rodriguez & Goyal (2013) the researchers did not focus too much on the cause-effect relationship between moral distress and health outcomes, but rather th...
