Leadership in Nursing
Nursing is one of the most sensitive jobs in the medical industry and even when compared to a number of other industries. This is mostly due in part to the life choices the nurses have to make in the split second of the moment, sometimes without enough information. However, there is also the fact that, the nursing field much like most of the medical fields are always growing. This is relative to the fact that, research is a crucial part of medicine (Adams, 2017). As such, there is the element of personal growth that are associated with continuous quality improvement which are crucial to enhancing the level of health care delivery. With every little detail on the improvement of health care, the nurses are required to enhance their skills and provide better health care deliverables ("Leadership Styles: Choosing the Right Approach for the Situation", 2017). In this respect, there are two main aspects that relate to the level of guidance the nurses expect and level growth the patients expect (Ryan, 2016).
Being a manager is a different approach than being a leader. It is however most important to note that the two go hand in hand even though they are significantly different. A nurse in a leadership position will at one time be required to assume the duties of a leader and at time they will be required to take on the hat of a manager (Adams, 2017). It is therefore important to understand the different approaches that a nurse in a leadership position will take if they choose ether of the two (Ryan, 2016). As a leader, and with reference to continuous improvement in quality, the nurse will mostly focus on the innovative approach. This is to mean the nurse will mostly be concerned with the innovative ideas those under them have towards enhancing the level of quality from a growth oriented position. As a leader, the nurse will also be focused on the people rather than the processes ("Leadership Styles: Choosing the Right Approach for the Situation", 2017). This is to mean the leader will mostly be looking at the way the other nurses carrying out the activities towards improved quality are affected. Secondly the nurse will also be concerned with the impact the improvements on quality will have on the patient and how best they can enhance the impacts (Adams, 2017). Rather than trying to control the staff that are under ten, a leader, will mostly give the staff autonomy to become and deliver the best results they can. This further connects to the fact that a leader will mostly have long term goals. It is also crucial to note as a leader, one is required to lead by example and this also means the staff are also allowed to take responsibility of their actions and decisions (Adams, 2017).
As a manager on the other hand, the approach taken is more process oriented than people. This means instead of giving the staff a chance to explore their abilities, they are offered on what to do and how to do it. This curtains the element of innovation as staff are required to follow a set of guidelines at all times ("Leadership Styles: Choosing the Right Approach for the Situation", 2017). There is very little room for creativity and when it does happen it is rarely appreciate...
