The nursing field is often termed as a calling because of how much effort the nurses put in, despite the glaring challenges experienced regularly. It is always the goal of every nursing professional to give the best possible healthcare to patients. There are however, a number of obstacles that often stand in the way of this. While there have been efforts to ensure that such challenges have been addressed, a lot still needs to be done to ensure that the optimum care conditions are established. The most pertinent problem in the field is inadequate staffing. An insight into inadequate staffing can help shed further light on how it is impacting quality service delivery.
Inadequate staffing is one of the issues that is facing nursing. It entails all the situations involving a lesser number of the nursing personnel in relation to the amount of work to be done around a given healthcare setup. It is critical since it determines the quality of medical services provided at the hospitals. When nurses are overwhelmed with work, there is a high likelihood that the services offered will not be up to standard due to burnout. Also, it is an issue of personal and professional concern. According to Huston (2014), the patient mortality rate is inversely proportional to nurse staffing. Higher nursing levels result in high-quality service delivery hence lower mortality rate and vice versa.
