How Disciplines Outside of Sociology Study Gender
Gender examination is normally done using distinctive approaches and this applies across different disciplines. Every discipline has its own assumptions about gender apart from the fact that gender studies are conducted using different methods in different disciplines. The perspectives of other disciplines when it comes to gender contrasts the sociological perspective and this brings clarity to the sociological perspective. The psychological perspective focuses on the mind and the brain because the main interest of a psychologist is in the individual. Moreover, early childhood development is the early origin of gender. Psychologists focus on how children unconsciously understand differences in anatomy and develop their feminine and masculine identity. In addition to that, the sex difference research seeks to determine whether psychological tests can be used to determine sex differences. In an attempt to find out the sex differences between men and women, the research examines different variations in behaviors, dispositions and traits The main focus of the psychological approach is normally on cognitive ability differences in the form of visio-spatial, verbal and mathematical differences.
A meta-analysis of different studies indicates that there are distinct differences between men and women. Sex differences are not significant because they are very few in number. Furthermore, it is difficult to establish sex differences because the research fails to specify the connection between difference and inequality. Again, the research is descriptive with implications that are beyond the realm of research. The focus of the anthropological approach to gender is the manner in which societies interact with their physical environment by comparing cultures. The approach examines how different cultures define gender through sustained fieldwork. The only similarity between sociology and cultural anthropology is that they both study social life.
Endocentric theories and other studies on sex and temperament in primitive societies indicate that what women do is less important as compared to what men do.
