Patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders have neurotransmitter or brain chemicals’ imbalance, i.e., dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate. These neurotransmitters allow nerve cells within the brain to send information to each other. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are mainly associated with neurotransmitter (dopamine) dysfunction, and treatments are developed targeting dopamine pathways within the central nervous system. For example, dopaminergic dysfunction plays a significant role in developing psychotic manifestations in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. In addition, it remains one longstanding hypothesis concerning the pathophysiology of bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Regarding the development of delusions, neurotransmitter dysfunction is linked to neural signaling of belief updates instead of simply sensory surprise. This indicates that abnormal dopamine signaling could make an irrelevant stimulus be understood as meaningful, thus resulting in more significant subclinical paranoid ideation (McCutcheon, Krystal, & Howes, 2020).
