With the increasing incidences of illness and mortality, there is an increased concern about professional competency. With the increased concern, nurses and other healthcare workers are under increased pressure to offer safe and effective care. Consequently, there is pressure on health care personnel training institutions to produce highly qualified graduates capable of addressing the issues in the industry. To produce qualified personnel, the curriculum used in training has to be developed by professionals and stakeholders in the healthcare industry. In addition to a well-developed curriculum, institutions must hire competent tutors as well as incorporate effective practice sessions. Additionally, it is necessary for healthcare institutions to provide continuous training on the job to accommodate new healthcare practice developments. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the inclusion of patient safety in the nursing education curriculum and consequently raise patient safety levels.
Nursing Education Curriculum for Improving Patient Safety
The safety of patients within the health care system is a matter of public health concern. This is more so after the release of the revolutionary report, To Err Is Human, in the late 90s (Vaismoradi, 2012). The study suggested the redesigning of the health care system to incorporate conventional safety techniques to reduce the number of medical fatalities as a result of avoidable errors. The report focused on the need to increase patient safety derived from the realization that the nursing community did not have a global methodology to deal with patient welfare (Vaismoradi, 2012).
The fact that the public is aware of the risks patients are exposed to in the hospital setup erodes public trust in the health care system. Additionally, exposure to risk for patients gives rise to a great economic and moral liability on the health care system and the health care givers. Consequently, as primary caregivers, nurses have been identified as key players in the provision of quality patient care, and thus, their performance is central to refining patient safety within the health care system (Vaismoradi, 2012). While the focal point has been on the provision of safer services, achievement of the overall safety levels recommended requires a lot more. For that reason, it is crucial that the primary care givers and nurses receive proper training on the subject.
The challenge falls on the nursing tutors and nursing education curriculum developers to develop and equip the nurses with the necessary skills for the provision of safe health care. Presently, nursing students do not undergo patient safety as a separate topic in nursing school. The result of this inadequacy is that nurses graduate without proper knowledge of patient safety and their role as nurses in ensuring that patients receive proper and safe care (Montgomery, Killam, Mossey & Heerschap, 2014).
