Health diversities among the whole population and Native Americans are a major health issue. There exist difficulties in recognizing the common features of Native Americans. This is because there are over 500 tribes and over 100 states and non-federally acknowledged bands and tribes that have distinct beliefs and traditions. This population lives in reservations and rural regions of southwest America as well as Alaska. To this native population, conventional healing is a medicinal system that relies on the inseparability of spirit, body, and mind. With increasing global changes, more Native Americans are moving to urban contexts where they need to look for health care from other providers other than their conventional healers. Culturally competent care provides a promise to change their health status. However, realizing culturally competent care for Native Americans need strategies. Therefore, this paper will present the strategies that need to be integrated to realize culturally competent care for Native Americans.
Though care should be individual, it is important to first comprehend the cultural features of Native Americans to plan for their care. Considering the role of family and the role that each plays is important. Though numerous tribal distinctions are there, the 3-generation extended family is universal to them (Struthers, Eschiti & Patchell, 2004). Activities like education and discipline are handled by uncles, aunts, and grandparents whereas pleasurable social relations and economic issues are addressed by biological parents. Thus, when caring for patient caregivers should involve the identified handler in the care as well as teaching for the person. The caregiver should not make judgments about the patient concerning their disinterest or lack of responsibility in their care. Policies should involve the significance of the extended family and maximize on the numerous providers of role modeling, affection, and care.
