Choose a cultural group for structured study (when choosing a culture you should choose one that has accessible information to complete the entire SLP. In addition, your culture should be well defined. For example Hispanic culture is not acceptable because the term Hispanic refers European colonization and encompasses many cultures such as Cuban, Mexican, etc. Another example is American Indian, as there are numerous tribal nations than comprise American Indian).

The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence was initially used as an assessment tool by nurses and later a schematic, a concept of meta-paradigm and a cultural competence scale were included into the model. Purnell model is a conceptualization founded on several theories and on research base obtained from family development theories, administrative, organizational, communication as well as sociology, anthropology, psychology, physiology, anatomy, biology, nutrition, ecology, pharmacology, history, religion, economics, linguistics and political science.The major assumptions of the model are founded on a broad perspective hence are used across practice disciplines as well as environmental contexts. The model aids in helping the practitioners develop awareness of their existence, thoughts, sensation, and environment without allowing these factors cause undue impact on those who are given care. A culturally competent caregiver is one who has adapted care in a manner that is consistent with the client’s culture and therefore cultural competence is a conscious and nonlinear process (Purnell, 2002). This paper is aimed at discussing North Korean culture using the Purnell model by addressing several construct.
Koreans are ethnic descendants belonging to Tungusic branch of Ural-Altaic family. Korean is their spoken language and is similar to Mongolian, Japanese, Hungarian and Finnish. The Koreans have fiercely defended their identity as a distinct culture most likely because in its five thousand year history, it suffered more than nine hundred invasions from different communities. Tungusic tribes originating from Altai mountain region within central Asia settled in peninsula during the Neolithic era around 4000 B.C. They brought with them primitive cultural and religious practices such as shamanism; the Asian religion (Yukhoon, 2007).
Koreans occupy a land known to them as Choson; land of Morning Tranquil which is located in along the basin of Taedong and Liao Rivers. Korea is located on a mountainous peninsula within eastern Asia. The Korean land stretches southward from Siberia and Manchuria and it borders China to the west and Japan to the east (Yukhoon, 2007).
Korean economy has had a sustained growth for many decades. However in 1997, it suffered a serious crisis resulting from lack of foreign exchange. This resulted in many firms collapsing and a rise in the rate of unemployment. Due to the Korean economy in-built strength and resilience enabled the country to overcome the crisis. Recently, the country was ranked 11th globally in terms of its economy size and 12th in terms of the country’s international trade volume. The country’s achievements are quite remarkable more so due to its relatively small size (ranked position 108 globally in terms of land area) and position 27 population wise. Korea has been ranked at the top globally in shipbuilding, DRAM semiconductor, Thin Film Transistor (TFT), Liquefied Crystal Display (LCD) sector and has been ranked 5th globally in production of synthetic fiber, cars, steel and industrial robots.
