Introduction
Continuous quality improvement is a process used by organizations to develop an appropriate environment for the management and workers to keep improving quality. The Veteran Affairs healthcare system in the United States applies quality improvement in all its operations to enhance efficiency, reduce wastes, as well as increase employee and patient or customer satisfaction (Detert, 2019). Therefore, the hospitals apply continuous quality improvement to assess their operations and approaches that can be used to enhance their processes. This paper will examine five federally qualified health centers and local veterans’ affairs hospitals and report the current quality improvements being implemented in each hospital as well as the benefits of these measures to healthcare receivers.

This healthcare facility is the largest Veteran Affairs hospital in the United States. It is the leading provider of healthcare for approximately 130,000 veterans in the United States (Hooke, Rose & Miller, 2017). MEDVAMC is a center for research and development, medical treatment and surgery as well as diagnostic care and radiation therapy for veterans. The hospital also provides injured veterans with other services, which include nuclear medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and gastrointestinal endoscopy. It treats spinal cord injuries and ophthalmology issues.
The hospital provides patient-centered care with a specific focus on the expectations and needs of patients. This form of healthcare is an essential characteristic of quality healthcare because it enhances the coordination of care and targets several quality healthcare determinants that include emotional, physical, social, environmental and spiritual influences (Hooke, Rose & Miller, 2017). Essential attributes of patient centered-care include shared decision making between clinicians and patients as well as patient engagement during care.

The Manhattan Veteran Affairs medical center also offers a variety of services that meet the needs of its veteran customers. The first quality improvement service provided by this hospital is engaging patients in mental healthcare matters. The facility employs effective strategies that include engaging patients during care, and this is vital in enhancing the quality of care for veterans. Among the issues that are addressed include diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders, PTSD, as well as depression.
