Changes in Nursing Practice
Numerous factors have been responsible for the changes in nursing practice, and this has had an impact on the treatment approaches that are practiced in a health care setting. In the past, nursing was generally concerned with caring for patients. However, advanced education has enabled nurses to have a stronger educational foundation and thus assume diversified responsibilities, like in the case of advanced nurse practitioners (ANP) (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Furthermore, advanced medical technologies have reshaped the responsibilities of nurses, enabling them to be more efficient, accurate, and competent. For instance, innovations such as electronic health records (EHR) has enabled nurses to efficiently access the medical history of patients, and this helps in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Moreover, modern technologies have reduced the risks of medical errors and thus contribute to better medical outcomes.
Practice Competencies between an Associate and Baccalaureate Education in Nursing
Holders of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) both practice as registered nurses (RN), but their practice competencies tend to differ based on the differences in nursing education. The education of associate nurses lasts for three years and is usually technical in nature. It concentrates on the clinical skills aimed at improving the health status of the patient. The scope of practice of ADNs is task-oriented, and nurses are usually accountable for their actions. Since these nurses have been registered as professionals, they must have the ability of assessing, planning, and implementing proper patient care from the time a patient is admitted till discharge (Spetz & Bates, 2013). Conversely, baccalaureate education is a four-year program that encompasses a wide range of nursing issues, including critical thinking, nursing roles, supervision, patient care, community health, and management. When it comes to the scope of practice, baccalaureate nurses must be able to demonstrate independent decision-making and problem-solving skills. This includes incorporation of physical, emotional, intellectual, and social competencies to enhance quality patient outcomes.
BSN-Prepared Nurse and the ADN Nurse
BSN-prepared nurses offer more holistic care compared to ADN nurses since their services last for the entire period the patient is receiving treatment, which is from pre-admission to post-discharge.
