Globally, incidences of diabetes and diabetic problems such as hypertension have increased at high rates- leading to high financial burdens to patients and the healthcare system. In the United States, over 34.2 million people have diabetes, with 90-95% suffering from diabetes mellitus (De Boer et al., 2017). Hypertension is a common comorbidity associated with diabetes, particularly diabetes mellitus. The concurrence of hypertension and diabetes is a severe risk factor due to its strong connection with progressive renal disease, diabetic nephropathy, stroke, heart failure, cardiovascular disease, and macrovascular complications (Shaikh, 2017).
Diverse guidelines and evidence-based interventions have been developed for the management of hypertension in diabetic patients. However, research shows the application of these guidelines is still low. This explains the high morbidity and mortality rates among diabetes patients. It is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States (De Boer et al., 2017). The use of antihypertensive therapy helps reduce risks linked to hypertension, such as microvascular, macrovascular complications, and heart failure in diabetic patients (Shaikh, 2017). Antihypertensive therapy plays an essential role in blood control and reduces the impacts associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Research shows decreased mortality and morbidity on diabetic people in regions that effectively implement such therapy since 1990 (De Boer et al., 2017).
