Hypertension refers to a condition where the blood pressure is higher than normal. It is often diagnosed when several blood pressure measures consistently elevated reading. The condition is often a silent killer since it may not present any signs or symptoms (Mills et al., 2020). Cases of hypertension are numerous in modern society. While there are many causes, poor diets and sedentary lifestyles have been identified as the main risk factors for hypertension. Hypertension may have serious complications, including heart failure (McCance & Huether, 2019).
Hypertension largely affects the cardiovascular system. Due to high blood pressure, the heart must overwork to ensure that all body parts are supplied with oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood. In most cases, the blood vessels are constricted, and the high pressure may cause injuries to these vessels (Fuchs & Whelton, 2020). Hypertension also affects the respiratory system.
