The above commercial is a TV advertisement for Domperidone, which is marketed under the brand name Motilium. The drug is used for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not currently licensed the drug for use in the United States and it is only legal in Europe. In the advert, a President Obama look alike is offered food by his host president Gloria Arroyo of Philippines. President Obama is however unable to take the food due to an irritation in his bowel. He is however able to enjoy the meal immediately after taking Motilium.

The above TV commercial features Alison Becker (brunette) and Ilana Becker (red). The commercial is about Viberzi, an FDA regulated drug for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. In the commercial, Becker has an important meeting but she is unsure of attending it due to IBS. However, her friend comes in on time and takes her to a hospital where the doctor prescribes Viberzi to relieve her pain. Later on, the two women attend the meeting where they make a perfect presentation. In the commercial, Viberzi is marketed as a medication that is capable of presenting instant results for people suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Pathophysiology of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a bowel disorder that is demonstrated by acute or recurrent abdominal pain linked with diarrhea or a change in bowel movement. Patients with IBS can have either diarrhea, constipation, or both. IBS is one of the most prevalent functional bowel disorders. The disease affects 10% of the international adult population. The diagnosis for the disease is done based on the typical symptoms associated with IBS. Diagnosis is often done to rule out the possibility of other diseases with similar symptoms such as bowel disease or celiac disease (Trinkley & Nahata, 2014).
For a long time, IBS had no definite structural or biochemical foundation. For that reason, contrary to other organic gastrointestinal disorders, the medications for treating IBS focused on relieving the most evident symptoms experienced by the patient instead of focusing on the underlying pathophysiology. Due to this reason, most of the available interventions are not effective and the history of the disease in the long-term remains unchanged. This is evident in the commercials discussed earlier as Motilium and Viberzi only treats the presented symptoms, which in this case are the sudden change in bowel activity that prevent people from doing certain things (Trinkley & Nahata, 2014).
The incidence and the bad response to laid down medications have brought about a big financial burden. Although there is no high rate of death linked to IBS, the disorder has a notable effect on the quality of life and in some cases it can cause serious disability. As an effect, a better comprehension of the possible underlying mechanisms involved in the generation of symptoms is important towards the effectiveness of future medications (Trinkley & Nahata, 2014)
