When people collaborate, they work collectively to achieve common goals successfully. In particular, collaboration involves combining effort to meet established objectives. In Weill Cornel Medicine Pediatric Care, physicians, caregivers, patients, and families cooperate to ensure that sick children get the best treatment so that they can recover quickly. On that note, collaboration makes professionals come together where they interact to fulfill a common goal. That is the reason why these individuals cooperate, negotiate, respect, trust, and understand one another well (Morley & Cashell, 2017). Multidisciplinary collaboration enhances proper relationships between health professionals and patients in pediatric care.
Multidisciplinary collaboration is the foundation of successful pediatric care, such as Weill Cornel Medicine. After close observation of how things are done in this pediatric center, it was clear that without the cooperation of physicians, patients, and family members, children with long-term medical conditions cannot get proper assistance. Swallow et al. (2013) argue that limited negotiation in a healthcare setting undermines collaborative working between health professionals and families of children with chronic diseases (Swallow et al., 2013). One of the most significant examples of multidisciplinary collaboration is the negotiation between parents of sick children and physicians. Besides, even if children need to talk to caregivers and say how they feel, nurses cannot rely on that information entirely. For this reason, when parents of these young people intervene and share their observations to the doctor, it becomes easy for specialists to understand and suggest the most appropriate treatment strategy.
When health professionals do not collaborate with families of the patient, there is a high likelihood that the sick person will not get the moral, emotional, and physical support that he or she requires to heal quickly (Beck et al., 2016). For example, take a scenario where a young person with a chronic medical problem, such as kidney failure, requires proper medical attention and his or her parents are not collaborating with physicians. In this case, even if the doctor does his or her best to treat the condition, if the guardians are not concerned, the treatment cannot be effective. Parents will undermine the doctor’s instructions and prescriptions, which put the life of the young person at high risk. Consequently, parents of sick children must be willing to collaborate with health professionals for the betterment of their ill young individuals.
After observing the daily operations of Weill Cornell Medicine Pediatric Care, one has suggested several strategies to enhance collaboration and effective communication between caregivers, patients, families, and other health professionals.
