Healthcare professionals shared common goals in improving human conditions by upholding both the integrity and ethics of their profession. This is especially true in facing the challenges of making sound ethical decisions. A code of ethics is established roles and responsibilities of a certain profession to provide guidance when making ethical decisions. A healthcare professional often faces a dilemma in addressing ethical situations. These codes are utilized when exercising judgment towards a specific ethical question.
The code of ethics of healthcare professionals refers to a system of moral principles that serve as a guide for professionals when facing a conflict. These principles include beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and respect for autonomy. In general, all healthcare professionals are expected to uphold such integrity and act in the best interest of their patients as well as the public. Healthcare workers must respect privacy and maintain the confidentiality of patient’s information. They should always keep in mind to work with care, integrity, and honesty with patients. The rights and choices of patients should always be respected and informed consent should always be obtained especially when it comes to their treatment. Another important behavior is communicating effectively not only with the patient but also to other allied health practitioners. When a healthcare worker is engaged in advertising, one should always ensure that it is accurate, truthful, and does not bring about any unimportant demands for services. One should also know the limit when to stop working if one’s judgment and performance is hindered by health or other reasons that seek medical attention. When practicing a profession, boundaries should be set according to the limits of one’s knowledge, experience, and skill. If the service is beyond the line of expertise, referral to another professional is advised. A healthcare professional should also ensure the accuracy and adequacy of patients’ records. Professional skills should always be updated through professional growth and development (Wynia, Kishore, & Belar, 2014).
As mentioned in the case, the chiropractor code of ethics states that one should maintain professional and personal conduct to the highest standards.
