Assignment 1: Assessing Clients With Addictive Disorders

Essay Instructions:

Addictive disorders can be particularly challenging for clients. Not only do these disorders typically interfere with a client’s ability to function in daily life, but they also often manifest as negative and sometimes criminal behaviors. Sometimes clients with addictive disorders also suffer from other mental health issues, creating even greater struggles for them to overcome. Assessing Clients with Addictive Disorders
Introduction
Addictive disorders are common disorders involve overuse of alcohol and/or drugs. Addiction is a chronic and relapsing illness that develops over time. Substance abuse, substance dependence and chemical dependence are three terms used to define substance-related disorders. Substance abuse involves both legal and illegal drugs with alcohol the most abused legal drug. Addictive disorders affect a client’s ability to function in daily life and often manifest as negative symptoms and sometimes criminal behaviors. Some of the symptoms include intoxication on a regular basis, avoiding family and friends, missing school or work, depression or hopelessness and taking risks (Sadock et al., 2015). Causes of addictive disorders include environmental stressors, individual personal characteristics, social pressures or psychiatric problems. Addictive disorders may also co-occur with other mental health issues adding to the challenges addicts need to overcome. There are various therapies used in treating addictive disorders. This paper addresses the assessment and treatment of addictive disorders in reference to the Levy Family video.
Episode 1:
My Levy claims he is sick but does not consider his regular drinking a problem. He admits that he has changed since going to Iraq. However, Mrs. Levy is concerned about the addiction but seems not to consider the possibility of an underlying medical condition; she sees hangover as the sickness. She tells Mr. Levy that his drinking, anger, and depression is tearing their marriage apart and wants him to go back to the person he was years earlier. She even tells him to go back to bed as she would not like the children to see him in that state.
Alcohol abuse negatively impacts an individual but also their immediate family. It impacts family finance, physical health and psychological well-being (Van der Kolk, 2016). Alcohol addiction causes a shift in family roles as a way to adjust to new behaviors associated with alcohol use and to continue maintaining order and balance. Children are the most impacted by addiction the effects can be left long after childhood into adulthood. Parental alcoholism can create poor self-image, loneliness, guilt, anxiety, feelings of abandonment, fear of addiction and chronic depression (Van der Kolk, 2016). Alcohol abuse can ruin a marriage or a long-term relationship as one partner has to shoulder more household responsibilities.
Episode 2:
Mr. Levy’s social worker’s ideas are good. She is open-minded about treatment, and she is enthusiastic about trying the new treatment methods. In most of her work, she has been dealing with older veterans and Levy’s case interests her due to his young age. She feels that he is struggling as the traumatic experiences are new to him. I feel that she is right in her preference of new treatments based on her experience in the field. However, her supervisors raise genuine concerns about the new treatment methods; there lacks sufficient research on...
