Carl Rogers, an American humanistic psychologist, developed a client-centered treatment in the 1930s. He believed that the current situation is more crucial than the past. A client-centered treatment is also called Rogerian, non-directive, or person-centered therapy. In this type of treatment, the client determines the direction and course of the treatment, while the healthcare provider fosters self-understanding and clarifies the client’s response. Rogers believed that the primary factors that contribute to the creation of trusting relationships and behavioral change are establishing a supportive environment of understanding, warmth, and genuineness.
The primary benefit of a client-centered treatment approach is increasing openness, confidence, and self-esteem. Therapists using this method promote self-understanding by reducing guilt, insecurity, and defensiveness.
