Compare and contrast the range of medical language interpretation and describe what is considered “best practice.”
Increasing cultural diversity in the United States has continued to pose a serious crisis to healthcare providers in offering basic but quality health services. According to the Diane Mathis' scenario, there are a gross violation of health professional ethics if health providers fail to meet the need of all patients. Effective and successful communication is essential in developing rapport between the patients and the health providers. Accurate medical interpretation help to bridge the gap of the communication barrier. Notably, medical interpreter help to provide accurate information and understanding for both the patients and health practitioners. The Case of Diane Mathis presented two different ways in which health providers requested assistance for language services to the members of the community.
Consider and describe at least two scenarios in situations in which patients are non-English speaking and qualified language interpretation is not provided. What are the key ethical principles to be considered? What are the implications for the patient in each alternative?
Qualified and competent Medical Interpreter should be a person who is linguistically competent and has a vast knowledge of medical terminology as a second language. Effective exchange of information between patient and caregivers is the most vital part of providing adequate healthcare services. With the language barrier, it is difficult and risky to treat patients. A patient with restricted communication knowledge will always nod for everything to pass the time to the physician. This can contribute to wrong treatment approaches. Most important, employing a qualified medical interpreter to aid in communication keeps patients safe in the facility.
According to the Dianne Case, it would be tempting to try communicating with the other members of the family in the event you are unable to understand the patient. However, the providers should avoid this, as cultural roles may exist and most importantly the family members will hold the responsibility to understand and accurately communicate the information provided.
The similar approach to the same scenario of Dianne is to ask the available employees which you believed were from the same cultures. However, this may not be accepted. It violates the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care (The National CLAS Standards). More specifically, the practice violates the principal standards, where a provider is entitled to provide effective, equitable, understandable and respectful quality care and services responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices (Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health 2007).
