Children with Chronic Illness
Children suffering from Diabetes, Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy require special health care needs in any setting (either at home or school). Due to the advancements in medical technology, improved social attitudes towards these types of children and the law have combined their efforts to allow these children with special health care needs to attend schools where they can be managed properly.
Care and Medical Management
Diabetes
This is a chronic metabolic disorder caused due to the inability of the body to produce or use insulin. It has no cure but its treatment is directed towards managing and controlling it. This is done by balancing food, insulin and exercise to achieve better blood sugar balance. The school nurse has to remind all the students who have been diagnosed with diabetes to check their blood sugar balance and monitor it for them during school hours (Brown & Kent, 2000).
Epilepsy
This disorder occurs when the neurons in the brain signal abnormally. This causes disturbance to the neural activities causing strange behavior, emotions or loss of consciousness. Students with seizures are managed by either one or more of antiepileptic medications. These medications are prescribed to more than three times a day. This type of treatment is aimed at preventing further seizures (National Association of School Nurses).
Cerebral Palsy
This is a disorder that affects the muscle movements, tone and motor skills. It makes children to make involuntary movements in a way that they are not able to control. Its treatment is as complex as the condition itself since each child is affected differently. Therefore, there are wide ranges of treatments and therapies depending on the type and its severity on the child (National Association of School Nurses).

Individualized Health Care Plan (IHP)
School children should have an IHP that includes Emergency Care Plan (ECP). The school nurse becomes the manager for the child and establishes school treatment plans, coordinates school health care, and educates other school staff on how to monitor and treat the children. Additionally, the nurse has a responsibility of involving the parents and primary health care giver of the student to develop a safe therapeutic plan in school (Brown & Kent, 2000).
Epilepsy
Since students will experience different types of seizures while in school, the school nurse has responsibility to educate the school personnel about the nature of this condition and the various types of seizures the students might have, how they can recognize them and what to do. The common method is to do a first aid to the student. There are no standardized steps for epilepsy first aid. The school personnel should call the school nurse to evaluate the student after the first aid to determine if any medication is required (National Association of School Nurses).
