Opioid crisis on children in New York City
The use of opioids by parents is the main reason why children have been affected by the opioid crisis. Children living with parents who are addicted to opioids, those who have been removed from their home, or whose parents died of opioid misuse are greatly affected by the pandemic (Winstanley, E. L., et al 2019). According to a report by a New York-based Hospital Fund, approximately one hundred and seventy thousand children suffer from opioid use disorder due to influence by parents or had mistakenly taken opioid drugs over the years.
Long-term and short-term effects of opioid crisis on children
Children below 16 years in New York City are likely to be exposed to short-term distressing situations. This includes psychological and physical abuse, societal violence, life-threatening illnesses, parental loss injuries, and family-related stress (Winstanley, E. L., et al 2019). These situations affect children's development, physical and emotional growth which disrupts the bonding between children and parents or caregivers. When this connection is disrupted, several other challenges may follow which include increased stress vulnerability, increased dependency, and inability to control different emotions. Children may also develop poor skills and likely to engage in crimes and other risky behaviors such as substance misuse (Winstanley, E. L., et al 2019).
  Children are likely to experience mental problems when parents or guardians are affected by substance disorders even during pregnancy. Prenatal exposures to drug misuse increase menace for both the child and mother. Such risks include miscarriages, stillbirth, premature labor, malnutrition, and neonatal abstinence syndrome. Therefore, as children grow up, they are likely to experience psychological stress, decreased family interconnection, and psychopathology (Brundage, S. C., & Levine, C. 2019).
Opioid misuse also has long-term effects which may affect many generations. When opioid disorders lead to death or impairments of parents, grandparents, guardians, or children’s homes may take the duty of providing care to grandchildren or children left behind (Brundage, S.
