According to Heather T. Keenan and Kristine A. Campbell, child abuse is the psychological, physical or sexual maltreatment of a child, and it can occur at any age. Most often, parents, caregivers, and teachers are involved in this type of abuse, and children aging from 6 to 10 suffer the most. The main types are physical abuse, mental or emotional abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse. Unfortunately, sexual abuse is more common than the other types, and hundreds to thousands of school-going children become the victims (Keenan & Campbell, 2015).
When it comes to finding the warning signs, a nurse should observe bruises on the buttocks and cheeks of children, black eyes, burns that might have produced lesions, and human bite marks. If a child is afraid of the things around, the chance is that he has been emotionally abused, and the nurse should report the case to the police as soon as possible (Keenan & Campbell, 2015).
