In “On Being Transparent,” Dr. Paul Griner, the University of Rochester’s Professor Emeritus of Medicine, shares some of his life’s experiences. In 1984, he was appointed as the CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, where he was responsible for supervising the doctors, nurses and other staff, and ensuring the provision of quality care to the patients. During his time there, Paul came across two major incidents, and those changed his life to an extent. A 6-year-old child was admitted to his hospital. He was suffering from a digestive disorder and was recommended neostigmine. Instead of getting 0.4 mg, this child received 4.0 mg of neostigmine, and that caused his immediate death. Dr. Paul Griner knew that it was a clear case of overdose, so he called media to clarify his point of view. He told the journalists that it wasn’t the mistake of his staff, but the system implemented in his hospital was not reliable (Griner, 2017).
Later on, Paul Griner got to know about a New York-based hospital where the management had refused to accept their fault. A Geneva-based wealthy person came to New York City to spend vacations with his friends. During a morning walk, he fell to the ground and fractured his pelvis. The patient called Dr. Paul on his mobile and told that he was not being given proper treatment. He wanted Paul to transfer him to the Strong Memorial Hospital as soon as possible. When Mr. Paul Griner inquired, the hospital lawyer told him that they never acknowledge mistakes due to the fear of being sued (Griner, 2017).
