All patients are entitled to right to confidentiality. Confidentiality is fundamental to preserve the patient’s privacy and integrity. Exchanging information, whether electronically, verbally or through an organization or agency, requires consent from the patient, which is usually written in a form signed by the patient. However, if the diseases involved are a potential threat to the patient’s community, the information must be disclosed to protect the health of other individuals living or working in the same community.
In Sara’s case, both her privacy and the health of her colleagues must be protected. To prevent these occurrences, the Human Resources (HR) Department must strategize to ensure that correct information is provided to all the stakeholders.
These are the strategies that the HR Department must do: (1) Ensure the safety of the involved party. The supervisor needs to talk to Sara to ensure her privacy. The details of her hospitalization and the disease that she incurred, which is Tuberculosis, must be confidential. The supervisor must also tell Sara that she could hire a lawyer and sue other colleagues who invaded or who will invade her privacy in the future. The institution must not tolerate bullying; (2) Provide seminars on the prevention of communicable disease and how to battle against them. These seminars will be conducted every six (6) months or when there is an outbreak in their community or workplace. It will include the definition, types, modes of transmission and the diseases that they can get from each mode, risk factors, epidemiology, prevention, and cure to these diseases. There are two (2) types of diseases: communicable and non-communicable. Communicable diseases are caused by pathogens that require a host to survive. The host is the individual that provides nutrition for them. Different pathogens have different modes of transmission. Direct contact involves touching the infected person, sexual contact, oral and bodily fluids like blood, saliva, and vaginal and penile secretions CITATION Ede18 \l 1033 (Edemekong, 2018). Indirect contact involves touching a contaminated surface by an immunocompromised individual. Transmission by droplet contact involve the nose, ear or eye which can spread through sneezing, coughing or talking. Air-borne pathogens enter the upper and lower respiratory tracts through evaporated droplets. Diseases that are transmitted through this are Tuberculosis, Chickenpox, Measles, etc. Feco-oral and vector-borne diseases include poliomyelitis and dengue fever, respectively CITATION Mound \l 1033 (Mount Sinai Hospital, n.d.). Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or chronic diseases, are due to genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioral factors which develop over a long period of time.
