Research Critique Guidelines
To write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of the research study conducted, address each component below for qualitative study in the Topic 2 assignment and the quantitative study in the Topic 3 assignment.
Successful completion of this assignment requires that you provide a rationale, include examples, or reference content from the study in your responses.
Qualitative Study
Background of Study:
- Identify the clinical problem and research problem that led to the study. What was not known about the clinical problem that, if understood, could be used to improve health care delivery or patient outcomes? This gap in knowledge is the research problem.
- How did the author establish the significance of the study? In other words, why should the reader care about this study? Look for statements about human suffering, costs of treatment, or the number of people affected by the clinical problem.
- Identify the purpose of the study. An author may clearly state the purpose of the study or may describe the purpose as the study goals, objectives, or aims.
- List research questions that the study was designed to answer. If the author does not explicitly provide the questions, attempt to infer the questions from the answers.
- Were the purpose and research questions related to the problem?

- Were qualitative methods appropriate to answer the research questions?

Background of the study
Introduction
All health care facilities require the assistance of nurses to ensure efficient operationalization. Patients are admitted with different health issues and require movement assistance in cases of adverse conditions. There exists different modes of acquiring the attention of the nurses by the patients to obtain assistance (Yin & Tzeng, 2009). Most use verbal calling. However, the invention of the call lights was an efficient innovation to combat the issue. There is intensive research on the efficacy of the call lights to ensure it is reliable. Since the inception of the call light, there is no research to show the response time and efficiency of the technology in relation to the ethics and reliability of the nurses.
Statement of the problem
The fall of inpatients occurs unintentionally, in health care facilities. Patients could trip and fall while trying to make movements in the absence of nurses who should help them. The resulting effect is additional stay in the facility due to injuries hence more expenses for both the facility and the patient. Patients often require assistance, in case they need to visit the bathroom or get their medication (Yin & Tzeng, 2009). The procedure for calling in nurses includes the use of call lights or verbal calling. The use of call lights and the response time by the nurse determines the viability of the call light.
Purpose of the Study
The basis of the research was to indicate the relation between the family call light and patient call light initiation. In addition, the study aimed to find out the average response time of the nurses to the call light and the rate of use by the patients (Yin & Tzeng, 2009). The study was conducted in four inpatient care units for adults, and the total falls within 1000 days obtained. The response is directly determined by the number of nurses and the staff’s reaction speed to the call. The effecting cause is when the patient, family or friends, visiting their patient requires assistance. The call light system is a model system that ensures communication between a patient and a nurse is efficient and for the benefit of the health of the patient. Most adult homes and intensive care units require the implementation of the system appropriately (Yin & Tzeng, 2009).
