Utilitarianism is a collection or group of ethical theories that aim to promote actions that can ensure the wellbeing and happiness of a large number of people belonging to the same population (Kelly, 2017). There are different varieties or forms of utilitarianism, with each of them having its own characteristics. However, the basic idea behind all of them is the same: happiness and prosperity of other people should be given the utmost preference. In the field of public health, the concept of utilitarianism is applicable where satisfaction and happiness of patients are to be ensured. There are numerous public and private sector hospitals in the United States that serve people in the best possible ways. This means they are consistent with this principle, and doctors and nurses working there know how to bring positivity in patients’ lives by giving them the best and most effective medications and treatments. Cleveland Clinic and Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai are its good examples. The fact is that utilitarianism should exist everywhere and in all fields. This is because it ensures the happiness of a maximum number of people, and no discrimination is taken into account. When utilitarianism will exist in hospitals, then it will be easy for doctors and nurses to serve their patients and to work for the betterment and prosperity of humanity.
