A 19-year-old college student has been admitted to the Mental Health Unit with a new diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. During a meeting, the family asks what caused this problem, since nobody else in the family has the disorder. The family says that they do not want their relative "drugged up" by being given psychiatric medications, since they have heard negative reports about side effects of these medications.
After reflecting on the above scenario, discuss the following points (minimum of 250 words):
1. Based on your readings and knowledge, discuss what the RN would teach the patient and family about Bipolar Disorder.
2. Would the RN need to make any adjustments in the teaching based on this patient's age? If so, explain.
3. Discuss how the RN would respond to the family's desire not to have the patient take any medication.

When caring for a patient that has Bipolar disorder and in a situation where there are signs of negative attitudes towards medication, there is need for the treating RN to help the patient and the family members understand the condition and what the treatment is about (Wieseke, Bantz & May, 2011). It is important for the RN to inform the family and the patient that the condition is episodic and chronic ("NIMH » Bipolar Disorder", 2014). It is also important for the family to understand that the patient will sometimes show variance in their mood. The family needs to understand that the disease is highly genetic and this means that there could be someone in the family that has the disorder ("NIMH » Bipolar Disorder", 2014). The nurse should also inform the patient and the family that the treatment plan involves managing the symptoms and then restoring the patient’s ability to cope with their normal life activities.
