Using Healthy People 2020 in Health Education
Today, health educators teach in a variety of settings that go beyond traditional graduate health education. Healthy People 2020 initiative provides educators with an opportunity to examine the role of education to a wide range of learners, ranging from educated locals to future clinical health specialists. Healthy People 2020 is an easy-to-use tool that educators can use to incorporate evidence-based health perspective into the teaching of all health professionals and citizens. This paper details how I plan to use HP 2020 in my work, the resources that I would use, and my approach in tracking progress towards the achievement of the initiative’s progress.
My Plan of Using HP 2020
My initial step will be to introduce the learners to the Healthy People 2020 website to encourage conversations on community health and increase their awareness about HP 2020 goals and objectives. Second, assignments and group activities will help the learner to weigh where their community stands and what health topic is essential to them. For example, an individual weekly prompt may require a student to identify a health issue that affects their community, the affected population, and propose programs or interventions that can address the health problem. One can also analyze data of the trends relating to a specific HP topic area (DHHS, 2014). For example, a learner who is interested in childhood obesity can analyze data about the issue in the past decade to determine if the existing interventions are making progress.
Third, when completing research papers and projects, I will encourage learners to use HP 2020 as a regular data source. For students who have internships, I would also ...
