Allied health professionals and Advanced Practice Providers (e.g., P.A., N.P., CNM, etc.) are health care practitioners with formal education and clinical training who are credentialed through certification, registration, and/or licensure. They collaborate with physicians and other members of the health care team to deliver high-quality patient care services for the identification, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disabilities, and disorders. Allied health professionals are experts in a multitude of therapeutic, diagnostic, and preventive health interventions and function in several diverse settings including disease prevention and control, dietary and nutritional services, mental and physical health promotion, rehabilitation, and health systems management. Take a position on the idea that a non-M.D. (e.g., P.A., N.P.) can provide the same level of care as that of a doctor; or is it more of a case of getting what you pay for?
Non-MDs such as physician assistants (P.A), nurse practitioners (NP) and certified nurse midwives (CNM) cannot provide the same level of care as that of a doctor. Doctors and non-MDs have different qualifications, roles and scope of practice, and state laws influence professional practices among non-MDs. There is growing demand for better care provision, but this does not necessarily mean that the non MDs will provide similar care to MDs. Even as advanced practice providers deliver healthcare to patients, there are different scopes of practice in the medical profession. Nurses mostly provide primary care while their specializations are broader than that of physicians even as physicians are highly specialized even as there are those who choose general practice.
MDs mostly spend more time in school than non-MDs where they focus on certain specialties and some are consultants. The healthcare personnel have a professional responsibility to carry out their duties based on their authority or ability, and they also support ethical standards professional autonomy (Anonymous, 2015). There are differences in the level of care because the MDs are trained for specialization from the time they are residents. Physician supervision is common for allied health professionals and advanced practice providers. There are highly skilled allied health professionals and advanced practice providers, but they still lack the same level of professional autonomy as that of MDs.
Non MDs would require more opportunities and specialized training to work in some of the MMD roles, but still their roles are different as is the level of care.
