U.S. Food and Drug Administration
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an agency in the Health and Human Services department. With public health being critical in the U.S., FDA is tasked with protecting public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, biological products, cosmetics, and food supply among others. The agency is responsible for the provision of accurate health information to the members of the public. Since 1906, the FDA has kept an impressive track record of ensuring that the various departments comply with the national regulations and standards in the different fields. The agency’s mission and vision indicate the products and areas it regulates as well as the strategies that make the organization successful. Further, FDA has core values that guide its operations and hence ensure that all the staff members work towards the fulfillment of the mission and vision of the agency.
FDA Mission Statement
The mission statement is “Protecting consumers and enhancing public health by maximizing compliance of FDA regulated products and minimizing risk associated with those products” (Food and Drug Administration, 2020).
The statement meets the criteria of a good mission statement. Firstly, the FDA’s mission statement is short. Ideally, a mission statement should be about 200 to 300 words (Moseley, 2017). For the agency, the statement has 20 words which make the length appropriate. Secondly, the mission statement is memorable. Since it is only 20 words, it is easy to memorize every word. One does not need to struggle to memorize it because it is brief. Thirdly, the mission statement is broad, which allows for generalization. The statement indicates that FDA improves health while at the same time protecting communities. Such a general approach to the functioning of the agency is critical in allowing the staff members to exercise flexibility in adapting to the changes that occur in the external environment (Moseley, 2017). Further, the generality of the mission statement makes it appealing to a variety of groups including employees, the public, the board, and managers among other stakeholders.
FDA Vision Statement
The vision statement is “All food is safe; all medical products are safe and effective; and the public health is advanced and protected” (Food and Drug Administration, 2020).
The vision statement is focused on the safety of products that are released to the market for public consumption. Like the mission, the vision statement is short and memorable (Moseley, 2017). With 19 words, individuals within and outside the organization can easily remember the statement. Staff members in th...
