The physician is not supposed to interfere with Mike's believes of spiritual healing as they have different believes and faiths. Deciding for James' parents could mean a lack of faith in their God and thus necessary for the doctor to call a meeting with both parents to discuss their religion or spirituality. This would help the physician understand what needs to be done to help James in his critical situation. Asking for help from the leader of the church where James' parents attend to would also help the doctor save the patient's life. He or she can explain the situation of James to Mike's spiritual leader and ask him or her to talk some sense to Mike who is bent on waiting for a miracle while the son is in dire need of a kidney replacement.
Another way in which the physician can help James is by implementing the hope tool on the parents (Anandarajah, 2001). This might be effective as the tool asks for what gives comfort to the patient without hinting for any cultural or religious background otherwise it is asking for one's hope. The practices and role of the patient in regards to their spiritual well being along with their views on medical care. Doctors have also been charged with the responsibility of saving their patients as long as there is a way hence the nephrologist can ask the hospital for permission to go ahead with the surgery for a kidney transplant because waiting for Mike's decision may put his son into more danger.
Christians believe that health and sickness can be healed through faith and other rituals that they believe tell them to do. For instance, most Christians believe that even the incurable diseases can be terminated through prayer and believing in God though scientists say there is no cure for the particular disease (Smith, 2010). They also associate illness and pain as a means of bringing one closer to God the same as the way Jesus suffered during his last days on earth. Christians should think about medical intervention positively for them to reduce or prevent the escalation of a disease and also to respect the importance of life. They should also think of a medical intervention as a way of caring for others as it is rare and genuine.
Though medicine is important Christians should not forget that their faith helps them in remembering that there is another person who shares the burden with them and provides a guide on how to surpass difficult situations. As a believer of Christianity Mike should allow the doctor to perform his duty of saving James to avoid more harm coming to him as a result of his persistence of waiting on God's miracle. He should also pray to God for strength during the surgery and that of his family so as James and Samuel can survive through the operation without complications. He should not reason that God is putting him through a test of waiting on his miracle but that He has a way of pulling both Samuel and James from through the surgery in one piece and also heal them during recovery.
