Atomic nuclear decay occurs when there is radioactive decay of the nucleus of a radioactive and unstable atom where there is the emission of radiation in the form of energy. A radioactive atom becomes more stable when then an unstable nuclide decays and in the process there is radiation (Ball & Key, 2018). The process takes place when a parent nuclide or isotope decays or disintegrates into a daughter nuclide and if the daughter nuclide is still unstable there is further disintegration. The number of protons and neutrons is considered when classifying the atoms. The nucleus may change into one or more elements. Radiation emitted is in three different classes the alpha, beta and gamma. Alpha radiation (α) is made up of nuclei of the helium -4 isotope (two protons and two neutrons) being emitted. Beta (β) radiation is made up of electron emission. Gamma radiation (γ) is electromagnetic in nature where there is an emission of high-energy radiation.
What is the significance of atomic nuclear decay? (How is it used to our advantage?)
Radioactivity or radiation in atomic nuclear decay is used on medicine to diagnose and treat diseases and in nuclear energy. Radiation therapies including x rays are common medical procedures that also have therapeutic uses. Nuclear energy is that obtained by the fusion or fission of atomic nuclei, that is, the central part of an atom. Atoms are the smallest elements that can be divided and their nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons.
