Introduction
The regular assessment in the quality of wellness for patients suffering from cancer remains an essential element considering the fact that this aids in the identification of certain aspects of life that would result in distress and hinder the recovery of a patient. One of the emerging approaches in the assessment of such patients remains in deploying validity and the quality of appropriate instruments that would enhance the quality of life (Liu, Perkins, & Duffy, 2015). Cancer also known in other medical terms as malignancy is defined as an anomalous growth of cells in a human being.
According to Liu.et, al (2015), there are close to 100 different types of cancers with the basic one being cancer of the skin, that of the breast, colon cancer, lymphoma, prostate cancer and lung cancer. The symptoms of these cancers are considered to vary depending on the type. It is therefore imperative to determine that the treatment methods of these cancers involve the use of chemotherapies, radiation or surgical methods (pp 345). This paper therefore seeks to determine and analyze the approaches and methods used in the care of patients who suffer from cancer. The paper will also address the diagnosis and staging methods in this disease and evaluate the complications that have been identified among patients with this illness including the side effects and treatment methods that are directed towards lessening its psychological and physical effects.
The Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer
In determining the staging methods of cancer, it is essential to first determine that this approach gives a description of a patient’s level of cancer based on the size and extent of the tumor and whether this disease has or has not spread in an individual’s body. Staging is therefore centered on the knowledge of the manner in which cancer may progress (Olson, 2014). Different literatures have alluded to the fact that cancer cells have a tendency of growing and dividing without control and order and never die when expected. This therefore results in the forming of a mass of tissues that result in the development of tumor. When this tumor develops and grows further, it invades the nearby organs and tissues.
Cancer cells also have the capacity to break out of a tumor and enter into a patient’s lymphatic system or bloodstream. When it moves into the bloodstream or the lymphatic systems, the cells then spread from the primary areas into the lymph nodes and other organs, where they result in the formation of new tumors. As described by the National cancer institute, this spread is known as metastasis (Olson, 2014). Through the stag of cancer, medical personnel’s are in a position to plan treatment methods and do a prediction on the intensity of this ailment including the patient’s chances of recovery. Staging is therefore determined by certain factors that include the size and development including growth of the tumors, whether cancer has spread through the lymph nodes and other parts of the body thus infecting other organs.
