Applying Ethical Decision Making

Introduction
Establishing good ethical decision s is critical for all health care professionals. This is critical because it makes it possible to provide patients with quality care and may also help in preventing and avoiding harm. However, it is essential to note that every situation in the healthcare setting is different and ethical dilemmas can occur even in cases where the hospital has implemented the required policies to address such issues. Some of the ethical issues that face health care practitioners include avoiding conflict of interest, managing patients who do not have decision-making capacity and the need to manage the distress experienced when providing care to patients with minimal benefits in return. The literature examines the benefits of ethical decision-making among health care professionals, evaluate how evidence-based practice support ethical decision making, and explain and analyze a legal case where the ethical decision was made.
The importance of ethical decision-making for health care professionals.
Ethical decision making is critical among health care professionals because it helps them in solving critical challenges that may be encountered when working with patients from different social backgrounds. For example, there are situations that patients can refuse care because of cultural and religious matters. Ethical decision making in a healthcare setup usually comes in two ways. The first one is the easy way ahead whereby the choices are clear between a right and a wrong. The second one is the tougher choice, where a healthcare practitioner has to make a choice between two presumable right decisions. This can involve, for example, having to decide which one is the right option to take, be it the patient’s or the doctor’s.
Moral decision-making helps the practitioner not to deliver unnecessary treatment to the patient. Additionally, ethical decision making helps the practitioners to decide on when the patient’s confidential data may be disclosed to third parties such as the insurers. Further, ethical-decision making can also help in controlling dubious practices such as unfair charging of patients where the uninsured parents are often charged more than insured individuals (Deshpande, 2009). Also, ethics determine the engagement and interaction that practitioners should maintain with their patients; the relationship should always be professional.
