She is unresponsive and on life-support machines. The physicians and staff have expressed concerns regarding her ability to recover, as she is now in a persistent vegetative state with no brain activity. Her parents believe that she will recover given time and are insistent that she continue to receive aggressive treatment. Carrie's husband, Bob, is at her bedside. He is requesting that the physicians stop providing treatment and is adamant that keeping her on the machines is against her wishes. The patient does not have a living will or a medical power of attorney identified. As a member of the ethics committee, you have been contacted to determine the best course of action. In nursing, it is widely accepted that ethical problems are unavoidable and that practitioners in the health sector, including nurses, are accountable ethically for their decisions. As medical physicians and staff, it is part one’s duty to assist in making critical decision pertaining to health care provision. However, Cooper (2012), draws upon a more realistic and pragmatic resource to discover and give guidance on ethical decision making. There are dozens models on ethical decision-making, but key stages exist, which prescribers and nurses should consider. The reason for formalizing ethical decisions into models is that the quality of decision making is improved eliminating mere intuition to availing to the prescribers the essential factors that should be considered (Cooper,2007; Park, 2012). Fry and Johnston (2002) support this models saying that all models provide a methodical approach to the analysis of both the accurate and value scopes involved in ethical struggles and provide an orderly approach to using ethical decision in the care of the patient. With the many stages that there are, Cooper (2012) summarized a core set of the stages common with the rest into four main ones. These are identifying what the ethical problem is based on factual evidence. Which in this case is turning off the life support machines since Carrie remains unresponsive. The other involves thinking of others, which itself involves who holds the important views, who can help and who it is that should make the decision. Carrie, her husband, and the practitioners, all find keeping the machines on a futile endeavor and it only perpetuates her suffering. On the other hand, her parents believe that she will recover.
