The response and emergency preparation for nurses living near a nuclear plant is necessary to handle the emergencies effectively, with nurses following general guidelines issued by the Joint Commission and the hospital policies to improve quality of care. Kurt Lewin’s change theory is applicable in the case, and there are three phases to the theory. The first phase is unfreezing, which focuses on identifying ways to minimize the counterproductive ways (Lewis, 2012). It is necessary to reduce resistance to change. The main way to achieve this is focusing on the driving force to influence behavior or reduce the impact of the restraining forces that make are a hurdle to change. The main driving force is the desire for nurse to be better prepared, but the encouragement and assistance of nurse leaders and managers is necessary. However, the lack of knowledge is a restraining force towards emergency preparation.
